Rural Child Development Centres

KMH employs six teachers who live in five separate remote rural villages and teach around 350 children. These extra lessons mean the children are more likely to finish their primary education and go on to secondary education. Without this opportunity the children are often made to work at a young age and some of the girls are forced into an early marriage. The centres encourage families to participate in other KMH projects, cultural programmes and educational tours

Most of the parents of children in the remote rural villages have not had any access to education, limiting their main employment opportunities to agricultural labour. This requires them to leave home early in the morning and return late in the evenings. Such work is seasonal, lasting only four or five months a year. The rest of the year work is harder to come by and the limited opportunities that do exist are highly insecure and very poorly paid. Consequently, children are often made to work with their parents rather than go to school. Some of the older girls are compelled to look after younger children, or forced into early marriages. The village teachers are employed to provide extra lessons to the children, increasing their chances of getting into high school. On Saturday mornings the children are encouraged to develop their creative skills, taking part in art, gardening and games. Parents are included in awareness programmes, when people come to talk to them on a variety of subjects such as health, education, agriculture and new methods of cultivation.

KMH provides books, note books, pens, snacks, and new clothes to all the children in the rural child development centres. The children are invited to Joan’s Grace Home twice each year and take part in cultural programmes. Here they meet children from other villages and other KMH projects. KMH arranges an educational tour once each year, where they take the village children to see the big cities and the coast. The tour includes a trip to a historic Hindu temple, a Christian shrine and a Muslim Mosque, allowing the children to learn more about different faiths. The headteacher of KMH's Kathryn’s Nursery and Primary School started her education as a child in one of KMH's rural child development centres. She was supported by KMH, obtained a degree in maths and now gives education and support to 300 children under her care.

The children from the rural child development centres are invited to join in cultural celebrations such as the Pongal (harvest) celebrations.
